Our goal was to try and parse out What do leaders at innovative schools do that is different from their counterparts in more traditional schools ? Most traditional schools are locked into static time blocks, whether they have a traditional 7- or 8-period daily schedule or an alternating-day block schedule with longer class times.

It’s also harder to keep up with the traditional pace of instruction when so many students are behind. Maybe you can do that in social studies. This educator quit her public school teaching job in 2022 and has since been tutoring students to help them catch up from pandemic learning losses. But math builds upon itself.

I had begun the week pretty excited about tutoring my own child in narrative writing. I figure the educational videos she watches while I work are good enough to cover science and social studies for now. It’s my job to help writers craft stories with engaging narratives and detailed descriptions of characters.

In the middle of all this activity, seventh-grader Jacob Higuera sat alone with his laptop, intently typing out a social studies assignment. Many classrooms resemble a traditional setup, with a teacher at the front of the room and students sitting in rows, at desks, completing assignments with pen and paper.

As a former tutor, I served PreK-12th grade students who learned the very histories I had to reconstruct my mind to accept years later. I first acknowledged it subconsciously in my middle school years.

A 2017 study by the RAND Corporation found that 17 percent of teachers in the personalized learning schools surveyed said they devote a least a quarter of class time to tutoring students one-on-one, compared to just 9 percent of teachers surveyed nationwide. “We want to stop that disconnection, catch them before they become opportunity youth,” said Jerome Jupiter, the former schoolteacher who heads up YEP’s educational arm, which combines tutoring with case management.
