Such spaces allow for uncomfortable conversations where close examinations of the migrant crisis, and other crises of socialjustice, can be debated in thoughtful ways.
However, we’re convinced that the success of this class is owed to our ability to build a community based on nurturing shared interests in politics and socialjustice – along with deep reservoirs of trust nurtured during two months of pre-pandemic, in-person classes.
For many scholars, Professor James was the first person to introduce them to issues of socialjustice in research: how even the choice of a topic can be political, how to work with what we have and to try to learn more about what we do not, and why it even matters in the first place.
Therefore, in this four-credit course (three credits for the assessment class and one for the student teaching seminar), students learn about assessment as they plan lessons that they will deploy in their practicum placements and beyond. In other words, assessment is one of the classes they take right before entering the field.
