Since 2021, the National Council for History Education has partnered with the Library of Congress’ Teaching with PrimarySources program on a nationwide program, “The Rural Experience in America”. One example of the work that will be presented in The Source is students’ discoveries in their hometown of Thomaston, Georgia.
The UC Davis California History Social Science Project frames current events within their historical context , connecting students’ present to the past. They could make a localhistory wiki or, even better, make contributions to our global information commons by directly creating and editing Wikipedia pages.
We even tied in localhistory by exploring Clermont Countys own Gold Rush in 1868. Each of these protocols ensured that students werent just memorizing factsthey were actively engaging, thinking, and making connections across history. This activity helped reinforce sourcing skills and historical interpretation.
