The Mount Olive Township School District in NJ, under the leadership of superintendent Dr. Robert Zywicki, has been way ahead of the curve. Before I became its leader, my school was one of the only middleschools to make the state’s persistently dangerous list, which meant that in the previous year it had at least 20 reported physical assault offensives, along with incidents of weapons and drugs. That’s how I began creating a school that they could thrive in.
BUGS, one of hundreds of “themed” middleschools spread across New York City and the nation, fully embodies the “Green” school concept. Sometimes there will be a name on a school that has nothing to do with what’s happening in the building. It’s more like branding.”

Seeing a Difference in Myself and Others When I got to middleschool, I was bused to a school outside my neighborhood because they had a GATE program. It took an hour-long bus ride to and from school every day. It was then that I started to build an understanding of the inequities that existed in school.

At the start of my teaching career, I was the only full-time, Black, male classroom teacher for a predominately Black student population in a southwest Philadelphia middleschool. I think of my former students who brought their own children to the middle/high school I would later lead as a principal.
