The two had spent nearly seven years designing a new kind of high school meant to address the needs of students who didn’t thrive in a traditional setting. Nearly 400 schools use the Summit Learning Program across 40 states. The online platform includes a project-based curriculum for science, social studies, math and English language arts for students in grades four through 12, along with additional content in those subjects that students can tackle at their own pace.

At the K-12 level, there’s been a push to create more flexibility in the school day for “immersive experiences,” like internships and hands-on projects, from players such as XQ Institute, the nonprofit supported by Emerson Collective that since 2015 has poured millions of dollars into efforts across the country to “rethink high school.”
He spends half the week at Lamar and the other half at Bowden Academy, a pre-K through 8th grade school just a 10-minute drive south, where he was installed as principal this fall.
