When he violates a classroom expectation, I can understand his need to do so as an act of self-preservation and resistance or expression of individualidentity, and I can allow him some flexibility. But at the same time, I wonder what message the rest of the class is getting, and how they are processing what they see.
Finally, it is essential to consider community as well as identity. Large pockets of this country have embraced individualidentities, encouraging young people to claim their race, gender, sexuality or religion as a part of who they are. This is needed.
