Instructional leadership was a routine part of the job along with the budget, master schedule, curriculum development, meetings, email, phone calls, and many other duties. With the evolution of social media yet another responsibility was added to my plate in the form of digital leadership. This is leading by example at it’s best.

A great deal has changed since Digital Leadership was published in 2014. Leadership is leadership ladies and gentlemen.
When it comes to leadership, there is no one right way or quick fix. From a learning standpoint, this requires a focus on pedagogical leadership , something I learned over time when I was a principal, which required taking a critical lens to my practice if I was going to help my staff do the same.
Today is the day that I formally announce my decision to step down as New Milford HighSchool Principal, a decision that has been most difficult to make. For many years New Milford HighSchool was just like virtually every other public school in this country defined solely by traditional indicators of success such as standardized test scores, graduation rates, and acceptances to four year colleges. Online courses through the Virtual HighSchool implemented in 2010.
While an array of successful strategies associated with more traditional methodologies still have value today, we need to rethink how and when they are used. SEL There are reasons that these learners have not experienced success in traditional education settings.

Failing to prepare for the unknown or addressing the slew of challenges that arose when schools were closed means that nothing was learned. Over the past couple of months, the staff at New Milford HighSchool has been diligently creating our own unique learning environments for our students. Early on, I used more traditional strategies since this was a new arena for me. It was at this point about four years ago, where I began to embrace and model the very same strategies that were being used at my highschool when I was a principal. This is a lesson I learned most recently as a presenter and workshop facilitator.
This was a natural connection to my work as a highschool principal as you will not find an effective leader who is not an effective communicator. So there I was churning out tweets about everything going on at New Milford HighSchool. and a commitment to the community.
To provide more learning opportunities for our students, the Academies @ New Milford HighSchool were launched during my tenure as principal. Think of it as a school within a school. These can range from traditional electives or more innovative options that align to student interests and current trends in the workforce.
It goes without saying that education, schools, and professional practice need to change in order to provide learners with the necessary skill sets to succeed in today’s ever-growing digital world. This is no easy feat, something that I experience each day of my professional life as a highschool principal.
One of the best parts about job-embedded, on-going work with school districts is facilitating a variety of professional learning opportunities. They have utilized me as a keynoter, coach (leadership and teaching), and workshop presenter.
The summer of 2013 was probably one of the most important hiring years during my seven-year tenure as a highschool principal. The hiring process can make or break a school culture. The learning space that was once in the traditional library has now been taken over by the students.
A national focus on standardized testing and accountability has only made the experience worse for kids who only crave relevance, meaning, and value out of the hours of time spent in classrooms each school year. Sometimes that means looking beyond traditional metrics of success to find other areas where the needle can be moved. Authentic leadership is being honest and vulnerable about where you are to help others get to where they need and want to be to succeed. While women are not just outpacing men in degrees — girls are doing better academically and completing highschool on time more frequently than boys — the push for parity has been moving at a glacial pace in STEM. About 28 percent of highschool girls reported that they avoid classes with low female enrollment.
Theres a half-billion-dollar federal program that is supposed to help students with disabilities get into the workforce when they leave highschool, but most parents and even some school officials dont know it exists. I just wish we could have gotten help while he was still in highschool. But he never got that.

It was at this school that I saw tracking firsthand, and students knew who was in gifted programs and who was in lower-level classes. Like any other middle school student, I was on a rough journey of self-discovery. As I sit here writing this post, I cannot help but reflect on the positive changes that have taken place at my school and with me professionally. Through connected learning and sharing, I have become better equipped to lead change at New Milford HighSchool and to begin to transform the teaching and learning process. technology.
