Collentine’s Global Perspectives in Literature had a different spin on their research paper this year. In previous years, students had selected a charity to research and then, where possible, were to work for that charity in some capacity as part of the research paper experience.
The stakes have become higher as changes in a globallyconnected world are far outpacing those in our schools. There is always a great deal of discussion about change in education in order to better prepare students for success. The proliferation of technology in the world is making it much more difficult to engage our students.
Image credit: [link] As society continues to move forward in terms of innovation, technology, and globalconnectivity, schools are being stymied by relentless cuts to education. Not only do many have access, but also older children possess their own devices (cell phones, smart phones, laptops, tablets, e-readers, etc.).
In a society that is now globallyconnected through easy to use and cost effective web 2.0 Schools that confine themselves to a bland curriculum, textbooks, worksheets, or learning activities that do not go beyond the walls of the brick and mortar building are really doing a disservice to their learners.
Allowing them to use social media tools to achieve learning goals and objectives, of which they already are familiar with outside of school, makes sense in the globallyconnected, digital world we are all a part of. For our students that have grown up in the digital age learning needs to be relevant, meaningful, and fun.
For all of us who routinely leverage social media for these purposes, we are a vibrant part of a globallyconnected community committed to improving professional practice as well as our own lives.
