I entered college in 1989 with an interest in humanrights advocacy, planning to be a lawyer. We don’t ask our students, some of the most talented young people in the world, whether they’d like to study the humanities. Nevertheless, higher education hasn’t had a true redesign of its approach to majors and courses in 50 years.
But they seem to miss the most important education of all: how to relate their specialization to others in an increasingly interconnected world. The National Academy of Engineering has categorically stated that today’s engineers need to be more than individuals who simply “like math and science.” So, where and how did we lose our way?
Educators and students critical of Israel’s war on Gaza face censorship, harassment, and dismissal. Israel’s legislature is currently considering a bill requiring the Council for Higher Education to fire professors who show “support for terrorism,” a coded phrase often interpreted to include criticisms of the state.
While these trends have been underway in the subfields of global health and economic development for some time, increasingly similar demands are being made for the incorporation of SBS into the fields of democracy, humanrights, and governance (DRG). In this article, I begin with a brief overview of SBS in DRG work.
