Super-ageing societies

Living Geography

These were identified by the World Economic Forum's 'Global risk Report 2025' as a global risk. Countries are termed super-ageing or superaged when over 20% of their populations are over 65 years old. Several countries have already exceeded that mark, led by Japan and including some countries in Europe. Many more countries across Europe and Eastern Asia in particular are projected do so by 2035.

GTE Conference 2025 #2: Day 1 - pm session 1

I arrived nicely on time for GTE after a journey down from Norfolk and the first person I saw was Margaret Roberts. Always a pleasure. I'd been to St. Mary's University of London before, for an ERASMUS project meeting. The first session in the first afternoon of GTE had the theme of Sustainable Futures. We had an active session exploring the idea of storylines in education.

Green jobs are an area that both the GA and RGS are interested in supporting and feel that those who study geography are perfectly positioned to move into such jobs with the focus of many geography 'A' level specifications and undergraduate courses being linked to sustainability issues and an increasing need to tackle climate change. Recently @The_GA asked @YouGov to research the public's view on studying geography and the skills and knowledge needed to work in 'green jobs'.
