'Remember Your Why': How My Grandmothers Affirmed My Purpose as an Educator

ED Surge

One day, during a quiet afternoon in my classroom, a comment one of my colleagues said lingered in the air: Just remember your why. They said the comment with a smirk and an exaggerated shrug, their eyes rolling almost involuntarily. It registered as sarcasm, not encouragement, and I couldnt help but agree with the sentiment. Early in my career, I found solace in those words.

In special education classrooms, students find ways to care without correction. During the four minutes of passing time, when other middle school students charged through the halls, calling out and dapping up their friends before stopping by their lockers and scrambling to get to their next classes, Justin and Laura would stand in the hall by their classroom door, waiting until the bell rang and they were allowed to return inside.

You don't need to keep anything that you already do. You don't need to do topics because they are in the GCSE specification and you want students to study them before they start their GCSE course.

Don't Diss me.

Living Geography

Another local paper has picked up the story of the Young Geographer of the Year Awards. This time it's the Diss Express. I was pleased to see that someone from East Anglia was one of the winners and was delighted to present Thomas with his award at the RGS-IBG at the end of November. The reason I don't have all my fingers showing is that the actual glass award is hiding behind the certificate.
