What sports didn’t offer us was the opportunity to develop awareness and appreciation for our cultural identity. When I was nine years old, my mother enrolled my brother and me in folklorico — a traditional cultural dance that emphasizes Mexican folk culture — at our local recreation center. At first, I was annoyed.

The concept of leadership hasn’t changed, although the conditions under which leaders work and learn sure have. In the end, though, scalable change resulting in a transformation of teaching, learning, and leadership was more of an exception as opposed to the rule. In times of uncertainty, strong leadership is needed more than ever.

However, the current pandemic and social justice movements across the globe have brought a more unified focus on the work that needs to be done. Digital leadership compels us to meet them where they are and engage in two-way communications using a hybrid approach. Each district is unique in terms of resources and demographics.

Relationships are critical in engaging students and families in meaningful and culturally appropriate ways, and are associated with increased literacy acquisition, lower dropout rates and improved attendance. Encouraging teachers to collaborate, coach and mentor others can also improve climate, culture and retention.

I think of how those 16 years as a principal elevated my own leadership skills and helped me found and lead the Center for Black Educator Development.
