Social justice is a core value of Fannie Lou Hamer Freedom High School, and the school also belongs to a special assessment cons ortium , giving it more freedom in what is taught than a typical New York City public high school. Sanes gets a lot of support for this approach from his administration.

Boaler also saw math as a lever to promote social justice. In 2014, San Francisco heeded that call , mixing different achievement levels in middle school classrooms and delaying algebra until ninth grade. Might we trade off a bit of short-term math achievement for a greater good of a numerate, civic society?

Related: What if public schools never reopen? Perhaps schools are simply more effective at advancing private purposes and we’re assigning them a role that they are ill-suited to play. If social justice is your aim, perhaps housing, health care, taxation and income may be more effective public policy levers than education.
