Civiceducation is the cornerstone of a functioning democracy, yet recent evaluations reveal significant gaps in how it is taught across the nation. High-quality civics and U.S. history instruction is essential for developing informed, engaged citizens who can navigate the complexities of modern society.

As a math educator at the high school and middle school levels, I lived for the moments when students’ furrowed brows ever-so-slightly began to unfold and smiles emerged. They offer an invitation to analyze how mathematics can be applied to promote civicengagement, advocacy, policy change and increased access to resources.
With his guidance, we established a cohort model for training teachers, ensuring that educators received the necessary coaching, modeling, and curriculum-writing support to confidently implement IDM. Sadly, though, the reality is that millions of Americans — in rural and urban areas alike, and including many underrepresented minorities — lack the reliable broadband connections needed to access postsecondary and K-12 education in a nation that remains in partial lockdown. Most college leaders are doing the best they can.
There’s good news in findings like these for educators looking for opportunities to affect change. Higher education faculty and administrators have a critical role to play in helping students gain a sense of agency as we confront a global climate challenge. The classroom may be the best place for faculty to start.
It builds on what we know works — the inextricable links between children’s and parents’ education and welfare — and provides families with the resources, stability and tools needed to address the tangled roots of inequitable systems. It fosters family well-being by simultaneously working with children and the adults in their lives.
