Let me just come out and say it, I need more administrators (Principals and Superintendents) to blog. I am a 35-year-old highschool principal who has many years of educational administration ahead of him. A blog can also be used as a fantastic public relations tool in your school/district. Let me quickly explain.

Well, another year of writing has passed, and it was a big one as 2019 marked ten years since I began my blogging journey. For me, the push I needed came from Ken Royal, who, after hearing what we were doing at New Milford HighSchool and then visiting, stated unequivocally that I had to share our story.
As I sit here writing this post, I cannot help but reflect on the positive changes that have taken place at my school and with me professionally. Through connected learning and sharing, I have become better equipped to lead change at New Milford HighSchool and to begin to transform the teaching and learning process.
Three years later I became the Principal of New Milford HighSchool. It was in this position that I really began to learn about effective leadership. We did this at my former school. As an author of six books, numerous articles, and a blog, I am dogged by a perception that I am a good writer.
One of my goals when I present on leadership, change, and transformation is to inspire other school leaders to begin to blog. I remember years ago my initial hesitation to blog until Ken Royal encouraged me to submit a guest post on his blog at the time almost three years ago. I will let you know how it goes.

I often talk about change whether it be through this blog or during presentations to various education groups. Regardless of whether the stories are being penned by myself, my staff, or the students of New Milford HighSchool , we have done just that at NMHS. We have taken control of our public relations for our school and now actively promote all of the great work we are doing to prepare students for success in a global, digital world.

With each Facebook post, email, Instagram photo, comment on a blog, YouTube video, Skype call, etc. My advice is to set up alerts for your name as well as that of your school and/or district. you are leaving a trail that can be seen, searched, or tracked. The alert settings are much more robust than that of Google Alerts.
I absolutely love to share what we are doing at New Milford HighSchool through the lens that social media provides. As part of this program I was able to share my insight on change in education , which was published on the ASCD Inservice blog as well as ASCD Express. Once the conference began I hit the floor running.
Last month I unveiled the first ever guest post on my blog written by one of my students. As my highschool career winds down to only a few short days, I am forced to reflect upon my last 4 years at New Milford HighSchool. One of my most rewarding experiences was my involvement in the Peer Leadership Program.
The bottom line though is that the conversations and relationships that evolved thanks to a diversified network and enhanced intellectual bank unlocked leadership qualities hidden inside me. He pushed me to extend beyond the use of Twitter to share what was going on in my school through a blog.
I have been extremely fortunate to be a part of OTAN’s Digital Leadership Academy (DLAC ), first as a participant in 2016, and now as a coach to mentor other adult educators in meeting their program goals. On Monday, July 9th, teachers and administrators from 10 schools gathered to kick off a year-long journey in the Maker Learning Leadership Cohort. Facilitated by Digital Promise and supported by the Grable Foundation, the cohort is composed of teachers and administrators from the following schools: Avalon Elementary School.
