First year New Milford HighSchool teacher Mrs. Westbrook has been tackling the Common Core in an engaging and innovative fashion. One strategy for helping students meet these demands is the use of blogging to scaffold challenging texts and to encourage students to consider evidence and the perspective of others.
It virtually gave every New Milford HighSchool teacher two to three, forty eight minute periods a week, depending on the semester, to engage in growth opportunities of personal interest. Jessica also used the time to develop the school’s digital newspaper, The Lance , from scratch.
At New Milford HighSchool teachers are adapting their professional practice as we continue to evolve into a Bring Your Own Device school where student-owned technology integrated effectively. All pictures, notes and assignments are posted on the websites, e-mailed or placed on their private homework blogs.
The trip involved twelve NMHS students, two students from Midland Park HighSchool (NJ), and nine students from Bishop O’Dowd HighSchool (CA). Please visit the blog for an in-depth look at the dedicated students who participated in HST 2013 as they reflect upon what they learned.

Blogs are an incredible social media tool that can be utilized in a variety of ways. Teachers can set up a class blog to foster creative writing and reflection, or as an alternative to a school newspaper. Blogs are not isolated to just writing, students can add rich media to posts such as pictures, videos, widgets, and gadgets.
Steve visited New Milford HighSchool on Thursday February 28, 2013. NMHS routinely hosts visits from outside educators, schools, and organizations in an effort to provide insights on our initiatives. It is also interesting that at New Milford HighSchool, there are no mandates for teachers to use technology.
