The trip involved twelve NMHS students, two students from Midland Park High School (NJ), and nine students from Bishop O’Dowd High School (CA). Commission for America’s Heritage Abroad, the group was able to dedicate a second memorial to the Wolf family, which honors the rescuers of this community.

Treasure hunting is long associated with endeavors to unearth concealed artifacts, illustrated best by buried troves of gold left behind by past communities. Accidents happen in dangerous sites, the promised artifact eludes hunters, or suspicion and disagreements turn violent. May engagements with the past be a part of the picture?

I was so excited to teach this class, I spent the summer collecting articles and artifacts from the local library and historical society. It also got me thinking about my own schooling and how rare it was to personally identify with what I was learning. Related: Teachers go to school on racial bias.

As part of the NCHE project, The Rural Experience in America , history club students at Cuba High School created a podcast about a local history topic of their choosing. Sue helped teach my students and me that public history goes beyond preserving an artifact behind glass and posting a caption about it.
