To activate their interest, I spent the first class period showing the Freedom Archives’ COINTELPRO 101 documentary. It is a powerful lesson that gets to the humanity of the enslaved and helps students really engage with the subject. I ask the students to think small about big wars and the human costs on both sides of the conflict.
