I grew up in an area with a large Asian American population, including 25 percent of the students in my highschool. And yet, I have never had the opportunity to discuss anti-Asian racism in the classroom, learn about Asian Americanhistory or engage with educators who understand my experiences.
Students gather once a month at my highschool for what we call “equity lunch chats” with teachers and administrators. Our long-standing curricula highlight a Eurocentric global history and white-centric Americanhistory, with only small cameos by the people who were enslaved, harmed and marginalized.
Because students missed so much instruction during the pandemic, teachers should get extra time to fill all those instructional holes, from teaching mathematical percents and zoological classifications to discussing literary metaphors and Americanhistory.
