Cade Lohrding teaches social studies for all three grades at Kiowa County Junior High School in Greensburg, Kansas. Kiowa County Junior High School in Greensburg, Kansas, provided a substitute teacher so that Lohrding could fly on a Friday into Burbank Airport in time for the seminars opening reception and dinner that night.

We could participate in a number of free Massively Open Online Courses (MOOCs), including over a dozen on Chinese History from Harvard University. We could listen to podcasts on the geography of world cultures from Stanford University. We could play Fantasy Geography. And so on… . government as well.

Student projects are quite varied and create student learning opportunities that may not occur in schools’ typical core curricula. For example, at Spirit Lake High School , students learn about Yamazumi charts, Kaizen events, elemental spaghetti diagrams, and other lean engineering techniques with Polaris, the local snowmobile manufacturer.

Amy Livingston, Chancellor High School, Fredericksburg, VA. Grade school had bewildered her. School administrators and teachers never picked up on Livingston’s hearing problem, and she remained in special ed until she graduated from high school. She found interesting geography lessons online.
