The National Council for HistoryEducation stands in support of history teachers in Florida. The social studies standards focused on African Americanhistory, recently approved by the Florida Board of Education, sanitize historical acts of violence against Black Americans.

Half American chronicles the lives of African Americans who fought in World War II and in the war against racism in the United States. Typical textbook curriculum teaches the Civil Right Movement as an isolated event; however, Delmont’s book taught me that the movement’s roots are with injustices and hypocrisies during World War II.
This is particularly true for learning our history. To understand America today requires examining the major events in our past that define our national character (for good or for ill). The crowd cheered at the idea that people like them — mostly white, mostly male — were the true heroes of Americanhistory. Most Americans were appalled. High school social studies teachers and scholars of Americanhistory don’t deny that the nation’s story is full of mobs, civil unrest and violence.
