I taught my students to respect the power of civic engagement and social activism. We must do this through teaching, learning and advocacy — as well as social activism and civic engagement. Recent politics has made it hard to extend that work. I have trained in, taught and led educator preparation programs.

Every year the group chooses an issue to focus on.

Edwards is a fellow with Rise , a national nonprofit that builds student advocacy campaigns, through which she learned how to mobilize new, diverse voters. This year is anything but usual, of course, and the pandemic’s ramifications for in-person civic engagement could make voting harder for young people than it already was.
