The proportion of students in public schools who are Hispanic is even higher in some states, including California ( 56 percent ), Texas ( 53 percent ) and Florida ( 38 percent ). Nearly 1 in 3 students in kindergarten through 12th grade is Hispanic, the National Center for Education Statistics reports.
