Like geography? How about a Festival of Geography! The Festival of Geography brings together colleagues from the Royal Geographical Society and Geographical Association (GA) for a joint celebration of geographical knowledge and understanding. I hope to see many of you down at the 'Home of Geography' for this special event.
Love the Geography symposium as the fraternity came together to share good practices which allow students to see the world through the geographical lens, developing observation skills, analysing trends, and understanding world issues. So honoured to hear from the Keynote speaker, Mrs Margaret Roberts, author of Geography through enquiry.
Two legends of international geography teaching, resource creation and training in the same virtual space: Richard Allaway and Matt Podbury have teamed up to offer some special support for teachers in international schools / teaching international qualifications. A new venture, and one I can certainly get behind.
The theme for this issue, edited by Ben Ballin , is the Geography of Togetherness. I am very pleased to have an article in this issue on this theme. Thanks to Ben for asking me to contribute some time ago. Subscribers can now download the digital issue and print copies will be arriving shortly.

By the start of September 2025 and the new academic year, a full suite of resources will be available for Primary Geography on the Oak National website. These will all be free to download. There are 6 units for each of years 1-6. 36 units all fully resourced with slide decks, worksheets, quizzes and videos.

More schools around the country, from Baltimore to Michigan to Colorado , are adopting these content-filled lessons to teach geography, astronomy and even art history. Some educators are calling for schools to adopt a curriculum that emphasizes content along with phonics. Weve all been there. Additional activities reinforced the lessons.

I've been involved in the creation of the Oak National Primary Geography resources for KS1 and 2. It's now been announced that the GA is the curriculum partner for the KS3 resources, which will be available by September 2025. Again via the GA Newsletter. These are emerging over on the Oak site.
He introduced himself to me by showing me the cover of 'Why Study Geography?' It was a pleasure to chat to Petr Knecht: from the University of Ostrava. on his phone and asking me whether that was me who'd written the book. He then showed me articles on Google Scholar where my book was referenced in his work and that of others.
GEO Live: Future Changemakers will take place on Thursday 17 April 2025 at the GA Annual Conference and Exhibition in Oxford. This programme, designed specially for students aged 1418, will enthuse them about geography and its wide-ranging applications, enable them to think beyond school toward university and possible careers in geography.
GA press release says: Despite growing diversity of the geography GCSE cohort, at A level and at university geography is one of the least diverse of all subjects. The subject, and its institutions, are not serving all geography teachers nor all young people who could benefit from studying geography. Change is needed.
I'm sorry not to be there for Denise Freeman's Presidential lecture, and catching up with the whole geography community, and also a chance to congratulate Steve Brace in person for his recent appointment as Chief Executive of the GA. Marvin Lopez is executive director of the California Center on Teaching Careers, which has plans to open a rural bilingual teacher residency program in 2025. Geography is another hardship for potential bilingual educators. He says that the challenges in increasing the bilingual teacher pipeline are multifaceted.
GTE = Geography Teacher Educators. The GTE Conference is an event I have attended periodically since 2009: the first time I attended, which was when I joined the Geographical Association. Until then I'd been unaware of it, and it was rare to see a teacher there.

In our response we signal the value of a geographical education for all young people, the strengths of the current provision, and areas in need of attention for the geography curriculum. Geography is a subject that develops young people’s curiosity and helps them to apply that curiosity and learning in real-world contexts.

Nicola Warren-Lee led a session on the GA's Curriculum Framework for School Geography , and Sophie Wilson presented on a virtual fieldwork project completed with Maria Angeles-Rodriguez Domenech.
