1944–2023 Karen Donne (Kaddee) Vitelli died on September 12, 2013, at the age of 79 in the town of Dresden, Maine, where she had been living since her retirement from Indiana University in 2006. In the summer of 1969, she rejoined the Franchthi Cave project and did a stint in Turkey at the archaeological site of Gordion.
Through this work, drawing on knowledge from human skeletal biology, anatomy, and archaeology, we often confront the immense social and racial inequalities that can play a role in the circumstances of ones death. But forensic anthropology testimony is only one aspect of our job. In fact, many of us rarely, if ever, testify.
