As I begin the new school year, I make a list of all my priorities: Lesson planning, grading, classroom setup, data analysis and new teacher mentorship. Since January 2021, 44 states have proposed legislation or sought other means to restrict the ideas teachers can present in the classroom. Not all teachers have this luxury.

The experiences included an online seminar (which included a virtual tour of UGRR), a self-guided walking and driving tour of significant underground railroad landmarks in Niagara Falls, NY, and the task of creating inquiry lesson for UGRR with the intent of being posted on the heritage center’s website.

By 2021, it had committed to its most ambitious goal yet: overhauling the way Fairfax County Public Schools teaches students to read and supports struggling readers. Jacqueline Rodriguez, vice president of research, policy and advocacy at the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, said she worries the bills will discourage LGBTQ individuals from pursuing teaching careers by sending the message that “this is not the profession to pursue if you want to bring your whole self to work every day.”.

The Russellville City school district created De La Rosa’s position in early 2021 as part of a larger effort to help educate its growing population of students who speak English as a second language.
